At our company, we understand the special challenges of wildlife tracking in general, and lightweight GPS devices development in particular. We have traditionally used primary batteries, but there are some applications that can only use rechargeable batteries. Our advanced rechargeable batteries have weights as low as 2 grams, and we can make a functional GPS device weighing as little as 5.6 grams with them. This innovation has become particularly useful for wildlife biologists who are working with small mammals, like bats or pygmy rabbits, for which the weight of a tracking device can notably affect their behavior. Because of these two aspects-minimal weight and reliability-our rechargeable options become an ideal solution for sensitive field studies.

Despite their advantages, rechargeable batteries do come with some trade-offs. These perform well only down to -10 degrees C and possess around 15% of the energy density that our primary batteries offer. For many wildlife tracking applications, including smaller species and environments where weight is very important, benefits of employing rechargeable batteries can give advantages beyond such limitations. We are committed to exploring and integrating the best battery technologies that best suit the purpose, enhancing our devices’ efficacy for GPS tracking in wildlife research so that biologists can carry on with their studies without influencing the animals they are studying.
