Rechargeable Batteries for Lightweight GPS Tracking Devices
Though rechargeables are advantageous, they do come with compromises. They only perform well to -10 degrees C and carry approximately 15% of the energy density of our primary batteries. For much of the wildlife tracking application, such as smaller animals and where weight is highly critical, benefits of using rechargeable batteries can offer advantages over such limitations. We strive to innovate and integrate the most advanced battery technologies that best serve the purpose, optimizing our devices‘ performance for tracking wildlife research in a way that biologists are able to continue their research without disturbing the animals being observed.
We also have an understanding of the distinctive challenges of wildlife tracking as a whole, and development of lightweight GPS devices as a case. We have traditionally used primary batteries, but there are processes that support only rechargeable batteries. The weights of our new generation rechargeable batteries are just 2 grams, and we can assemble an operational GPS device weighing as little as 5.6 grams using them. This technology has been particularly useful for wildlife biologists handling small mammals, such as pygmy rabbits or bats, in which the weight of a tracking device may radically alter their behavior. Because of these two qualities–low weight and reliability-our rechargeable devices are the ideal solution for sensitive field studies.

Here are the three most commonly asked questions but please do not hesitate to reach out to us at your convenience.
This depends on several factors including the battery technology, the temperature during the study, the capacity of the battery, the amount of current required by the GPS, the habitat, the GPS schedule and much more.
All of our products can send you information by satellite. The range of the data download varies depending upon conditions. The radio portion of the download has been demonstrated to work up to 40 km., but this is maximum under ideal conditions.
