Tracking Beavers

Traditionally, beavers have posed a challenge for GPS tracking due to their aquatic habits. The most common method—tail-mounted GPS—positions the antenna underwater, leading to poor satellite reception and low data success rates.

In collaboration with a project in Illinois, we explored alternative mounting methods, including both tail-mounted and glue-on GPS units applied to the back. While glue-on attachments presented their own challenges, they significantly improved GPS data acquisition success.

Small GPS Backpacks - The Best Choice

Our beaver backpack isn’t just a generic attachment—it’s engineered specifically for the demands of aquatic tracking. The rear surface is designed to optimize adhesive bonding, while the front features a streamlined, hydrodynamic profile to reduce drag without adding unnecessary weight.

Each unit can be customized with or without an integrated VHF transmitter and water-activated switch. As with all our GPS solutions, long-range remote download capability comes standard.
