Harnessing Solar Power for Wildlife Tracking

At Telemetry Solutions, we believe in efficiency and sustainability when it comes to wildlife researchThat’s why, for some of our product lines, we‘re able to integrate solar panel technology into our GPS devices. This new capability will enable researchers to use light, reusable batteries instead of heavy, non-reusable batteries. And by adding a mini solar panel, our units will have the capacity to tap the power of the sun to extend battery life and reduce the effects of wildlife tracking.

An advantage of the best kind of our solar-powered devices is that they are reliable and can function for a very extended time. In one of the cases, scientists were tracking animals moving from California to Mexico. Tracking was suspended briefly by the border controls, but with the solar power, the user was able to recover valuable data when the animals migrated back into California a few years later. To their astonishment, they discovered that the high-level tracking data had been collected in the meantime. And they could extract it. This goes to show how much solar charging can reach in terms of wildlife research, especially those that spend most of their time under the sun.

While the advantages of solar charging cannot be ignored, this ability is by no means suitable for all animals, especially those living in areas that receive complete shading from the sun. For sun-dwelling animals, our solar charging technologies offer a practicallight, and environmental alternative for wildlife researchers wanting the optimal tracking with minimal heavy loads.
